In my brother's '93 we put a NV 4500 in when the 2nd getrag died. We got it used for $500 and all that it needed was bearings and a new 5th gear. Now he has a leak that he thought was the pto cover which he fixed. Now he noticed the case was cracked about an inch away from the bellhousing near the top of the transmission. Who knows how long he's been driving with a cracked case. Has this happened to anyone before? We were thinking of removing the transmission, draining the fluid and welding the case. We would preheat and use apropriate techniques for welding it. We don't want to keep throwing more money into a high milage truck that we won't get out.
