96 1ton with banks big kit. Started having 3-4 shift shift prob checked fluid and found some debris in the bottom looked like syncro and bearing chunks. Pulled the trans and found that the pilot bearing was shot. Which will get the upgrade. The rear main shaft bearing is loose. My Question is it worth having a shop do a rebuild? (the shop has the backing from local diesel performance/injector shop) or can I do this myself with a rebuild kit? what should i expect to pay for what they said was the most advanced nv4500 they could build (ie upgraded 5th gear nut) does a range of 1,500 to 1,800 $ sound like a reasonable price?

To buy the full mainshaft nut kit with new bearings seals, and syncros from Standard Transmission and gear will cost you about 500 bucks. There are other sources but I use these guys.

If you have a mechanical background and misc gear pullers, snap ring pliers etc you can do the job yourself. The only really special tool required is a socket for the nut. PM me your email address and I'll forward you the NV4500 section of the factory service manual. It has a relatively good description of the teardown and reassembly.
