Last friday was leaving a friends house and when I tried going from 2 into 3 I heard a clunk and the next thing I know is the stick is just flopping around. I thought my bd short shifter had let go but when I moved the shifter back and forth and heard some grinding so I searched a little more and found 5th & 6th so I decided to try it and limped 20 miles home. When I took the bd shifter out I saw that the paw on the shifter rail had disengaged from the rail that actually selects the gears. I pried the cup that the shifter sits in with a 3' pry bar and was able to get them to reengage. Has anyone ever heard of this happening before and will it happen to me again?

I had a similer problem with a dealer loaned nv45 that they put in untill they ordered me a replacement under warrentee. It ended up stuck in 5th gear. I coasted into a parking lot, took off the tower and the end of the shifter slipped into the nutral position but the slider that was for 5th and reverse stayed in 5th position when I tried to downshift. I put it back together properly and didn't put it into 5th the rest of the 1000 mile trip. I am not sure if a nv56 has the same type of design or not.

I would have to agree with blacksheep. Sounds like a wear issue or a bad fit with the BD shifter. I am not familliar with the BD's but if anything like the stock shifter, there is a plastic bushing on the head of the shifter where it goes into the forks. If yours has or had one. I would make sure it was still there
