Anybody got any ideas on how to determine what's causing my noise?

I've got about 140K miles on my truck and I am starting to get a noise from the clutch/transmission area. At first I thought it was the clutch release bearing (throw out bearing), but it will make noise when the clutch is disengaged and the transmission is in neutral.

It seems to make noise most often when I slightly press on the clutch pedal. When I am slowing down/braking and I down shift it seems to make noise most often. I can't notice any gear that makes more noise than another.

I'm thinking about a new dual disc clutch from South Bend, but if I am going through the work of pulling the trans and replacing the clutch, I don't want to find out I have a transmission problem instead/also.

The transmission shifts fine in all gears. I pull a 12K lb 5th wheel, and use the truck as a daily driver too. I've used my Jacob's exhaust break for most of the miles (still have plenty of original brake pads left).

Any suggestions on what to check while I have the transmission out, or what I should verify? Do you think it's throw out bearing or transmission?

Thanks

i would guess its the clutch. depending on how well you work the clutch you are probably due for a new one anyways. by your sig you may want to talk to the guys at southbend. the dd clutch may not be what you need. some find its drawbacks too much to deal with like its a little noisy and causes bucking in reverse. personally i love the holding power of my clutch, so i deal with the quirks. just do your research.

The throw out bearing turns all the time on these trucks. Any time I've changed clutches on any of my Dodges the throw out bearings were done. I don't like the design plus they cannot be greased like on bigger trucks. I cannot be sure but after rereading your post I would suspect the throw out bearing. If it was a pilot bearing you would start having shifting problems. My last clutch was from South Bend. I got the complete kit with fly wheel, bearing & clutch. I do not have access to a shop that can resurface a fly wheel plus the South Bend one has a much improved pilot bearing.

I just put the SBC 1947-O kit (both bearings, pressure plate, and disk) in my '05. I was having issues with shifting into first and reverse. The shifting issue is why I had it replaced, but I was also starting to have noise when pressing the clutch in. Both my Pilot and Throwout bearing were done (this condition will cause wear on other non-wear parts such as the trans input shaft, so don't put it off too long once you start getting noise), but at 210k miles I could not complain. Surprisingly enough, the OEM disk still had about 1/2 of its life left! I tow regularly, but I let the cummins do the work instead of the clutch like you had to on old gassers.

Thanks!

Thanks for the replies.

Slow Six - I didn't relize the throw out bearing is turning all the time. I haven't had one of these clutches out yet (I'm used to cars and lighter trucks). Once I get into the repair, I'll be able to see how this is really working.

I have called South Bend Clutch, and I was looking at getting the complete kit with new flywheel. I was looking at the SDD3250-6K (Street Dual Disc) kit.

Is there anything else that I can do to check the transmission while I have it out other than just check the input shaft for play? I don't want to spend money to have a transmission repaired if there is nothing wrong with it, but I also don't want to drop the transmission back down again if I don't have too. I was a little worried that the exhaust brake may have caused additional wear.
