Thought I would post this here since it isnt a 1st gen specific problem.

Last week, I had my truck into Blumenthals and got the NV4500 conversion kit. Fully splined shaft etc. After getting the conversion the clutch was slipping pretty badly in 5th. So, I went ahead and had them put in a SBC Rally (reccomended per Peter). I just got the truck back today and this transmission sounds like its got 500,000 on it instead of 300 miles! Before the clutch install this transmission was smooth as silk with no noise what-so-ever in 300 miles.

Now, when rolling into the throttle below 1500 rpm in 3rd or 4th I get a very loud bearing growl. 4th will also growl the same way if I am cruising down the road and get into it. This thing growls louder than the Getrag that was pulled out with 226k!

I cant imagine why a simple clutch install would cause such a problem or alleviate it. The transmission is under an unlimited warranty for 6 months so im going to call Monte at Bluementhals tommorrow and see what they say.

What could be causing this problem? This is getting a little discouraging to say the least. Thanks in advance for any help you can give. I want this thing to be right this time.

My dads 97 has a growl at low rpm,s also while rolling into the throttle. I did a auto to manual conversion & i noticed this growl & was wondering if it is normal or if the trans needed to go through a breakin period. As soon as the rpm,s come up the growl goes away. Im not sure if it is a gear noise or a bearing noise. Can anybody give us some info on the nv4500 that would explain the growl. The trans is a brand new nv4500 not a reman. Thanks

Everything is brand new with less than 100 miles on it. Clutch engagement is smooth as silk & it shifts fine. The correct expensive castro fluid is in it also. Thanks.

Well, I took the truck up to Blumenthals and let them take a ride in it. The growl showed up. The mechanic said that it may be due to the steel plate instead of the cast plate on the clutch pressure plate. It may be resonating gear noise alot more than the old clutch. While he wasnt 100% sure it wasnt a bearing, I am supposed to bring it into them next week and let them drain the oil and see if any metal is found and then go from there.

In the meantime, I plan on calling Peter as soon as I can and see if there have been any complaints like this.
