Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) NV4500 5Th gear

I was wondering in what year did Dodge fix the 5th gear nut problem? I am looking at buying a used NV4500 from a 96 truck and the owner knows nothing about the 5th gear problem.

As far as I know the 5th gear "problem" has never had a real fix from Dodge, just new band aids to keep it together longer. If I were to buy a replacement 5 speed I would buy one that has the updated mainshaft.

Seems like I remember reading in the magazine that they finally went with a fully splined mainshaft in late 97 or 98. Little late, if you ask me, but better than the Gut-rag I have, I guess.

NV never went with a fully splined (under 5th gear) mainshaft. Therefore, they never really fixed the situation.

The famous "Nut" is the only fix they've come up with, I've spit two of those POS's off already.
