While I was doing the clutch I decided to take the back of the transmission apart and check out the dreaded 5th gear. To my surprise, it looks good. Do I put it back together with an updated nut? Or put a mainshaft kit in it anyways?

Looks as good as mine at 135k. I cleaned everything and used oem parts with locktite on nut. Hammered it tight. Holding so far.

I had a 5th gear failure on mine last winter, main shaft looked about the same as yours. New 5th gear fit loose, just slipped on, not tight at all. Also with the 5th gear nut tight there was too much main shaft end play. I decided to replace the main shaft, also reverse thrust washer had failed. Bought a bearing kit, fully splined main shaft, new 5th gear, reverse thrust washer and hub. Reset countershaft and main shaft end play. No problems since.

Good luck.
