I'm on my 2nd nv4500 with about 45,000 on it. So far I've had 5th gear nut fail (not too costly) and the 3rd gear synchros fail (pretty costly!) It's always been a little difficult to get this trans. into 1st and reverse for some reason but I've always managed to get it in - until yesterday, out of town, on a trip, with horses and trailer. Just plain won't go into reverse - all other gears are easily accessed. Causes??

Pretty bummed - was headed to my folks for the holidays and have a FASS and ATS manifold waiting there to install but now am gonna ease back home making sure I don't have to back up anywhere.

Thanks for any advice - I'll be taking it in Monday a. m.

what the??

Drove the truck around Boise for a day and could never get it in reverse. Drove halfway home, 150 miles, stopped at a truck stop for fuel and still couldn't get reverse. Pulled in my driveway, looped around to face out to the road so I could pull out, tried reverse and it clicked in like there was never a problem. This is crazy, I left my horses and trailer in Boise because I couldn't back up to hitch up.

I would describe the feeling when it won't go in reverse like something is blocking it. I can push the shifter clear to the right but not down into gear. In the past a little forward motion and playing with the gears a bit and it would click in. This time it lasted about 300 miles. I'm going to the trans. shop that did the install in the morning but would appreciate any ideas on what might cause it to do this. Maybe the truck is just barn sour.

Will it go into gear with the engine off? I had to do this for a few days before I got mine fixed. I would shut the engine down, put it in reverse and start it back up. The slave cylinder on the transmission was not working properly and the clutch was not fully dissengaging. It was about $115 part at NAPA.

The only other idea is that perhaps the pilot bearing is hanging up. That would involve pulling the transmission. Hope that's not it.

Good luck,

AC

Try putting the transmission in 5 first. Then place the gear in the reverse position and slowly let yoru foot off the clutch. When the clutch begins to engage, the transmission should pop in.
