On the side of the NV 4500 transmission below the fill plug is a cast boss that obviously was intended to be a drain plug, Has anyone drilled and tapped the boss for a pipe plug? Cast iron usually taps easy but a few years ago I created a huge problem for myself on an expensive piece that was to hard to tap with normal tools so I'm a little gun shy on some stuff now. Has anyone tried this or had problems? Is the case just normal soft cast iron? Thanks

Why even chance creating a problem for yourself when removing the lower pto cover bolts drain the transmission just fine?

I found there was quite a bit of oil in the back of the trans near the plug boss when I pulled the pto covers and the bolt drains a little slow, I didn't plan on pulling the covers every time the oil is changed. No big deal really like you said but if someone else has already done the R&D it looks easy to do. I think maybe I'll put one of those genos filter kits on it, then I'll have a reason to pull the covers anyway:) How often do you change your trans oil? Mine looked fine at 82000, I pulled a sample so I guess I'll find out.
