Looking at buying a used '97- seller said that when he puts it into fifth, nothing happens, no grinding, no nothing, just revs freely like it's in neutral - is this the symptoms of the fifth gear nut having backed off or something more serious? What's it cost to get the fully splined shaft to repair? Thanks!

Chris

Yup that's what happens , I lost fifth gear just driving , just gone , no grinding , nothing , took it apart and the nut had just backed off and so had the gear , they where just hanging on the shaft , it cost me about $375. 00 to $400. 00 doing the repair my self including tools & oil , oil was $54. 00 gal , the best way to repair would be with a new fully splinned output shaft from standard transmission or from Quad 4x4 , standard has the prices on their web site and quad 4x4 seems to have most of the tools , or go with a remanufactured transmission with the new updates , do a search you will find out nobody has good luck with just the nut repair , only one member , but he drilled into the main shaft to give the set screws something to hold onto . good luck , Dick R

I lost 5th gear last Monday,at 151,380 mials, got it fixed on Thursday, the nut had not backed off, it stripped out no threads left in the nut, new nut has now got 2 tack welds to help hold it, untill I find a 6 speed.

Since I will be trading my 04 on a 97 with a nv4500 tomorrow, is there anyway to tell if it has the fix. Is there a preventive fix, or does one just wait until it goes kabloooey?

The truck was built in 2/97 so I'm assuming it doesn't have a factory fix.

TIA
