Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) NV4500 how long w/o 5th gear?

The trans in my old V10 truck just lost 5th gear at 100,000 miles. How long can it be driven without causing any damage to the trans before fixing it?

Just a guess... but I am thinking that so long as nothing disloged and is roaming around inside the case you can probably drive it for a long, long time. This is just a guess and YRMV!!!

I drove mine for about a week before i had time to fix it.

I lost 5th gear in Wendover Utah, drove home to So-Cal. No problems.

I drove mine from North Dakota to Texas. Awhile back I believe someone posted he had lost 5th gear over a year ago and hadn't had it fixed yet!!!

I think the record so far by one of our 12-valve members was 12,000 miles and counting

Neighbor drove his 94 for almost a year without it. Busy guy, towed for a living so he didn't use fifth much anyway. Went about 100k before he got it fixed. That's assuming it is just the nut that's the problem though.
