NV4500 OIL

Boy you really opened a can of worms with this question ! Just finished a Getrag/NV4500 swap in my '92,and bought the trans from Blumenthals. I called them about the oil requirements, and they said i could run Valvoline full synthetic 85w90 p/n 975. I bought the oil from NAPA for $9. 04/qt. The guy from blumethals said they also use oil from MOBIL,and SHELL,and using these oils instead of the outrageously priced CASTROL SYNTORQUE wouldn't affect the warranty on the trans.

I bought my redline from my local auto parts store, Knecht's. They had to order it and I had to buy a case but no big deal, I've already used it all.

The only FULL synthetic GL-4 that I know of can be had from Red Line - MTL and Pennzoil also makes one. Syn-torque is a blended synthetic from what I understand. Some are using Amsoil and other GL-5 synthetics but GL-5 is not backward compatable. The additives that make it GL-5 are more destructive to "yellow" metals in the NV4500HD.

Standard Transmission in Texas has tested various oils in the NV4500HD and they came to the conclusion that when you bolt the NV4500HD up behind the Cummins it needs a synthetic to survive.

Lube

Have Series 2000 75W-90 Amsoil in mine for the last 130K miles... I haven't had a problem, and for a lot less money than SynTorque.
