At 163,000 miles I had the clutch replaced with a dual disc clutch, and the flywheel was replaced for the new clutch. At the same time a new input shaft was installed (1 3/8" diameter) and the transmission was overhauled. I now have a rattle noise in 3rd & 4th gear under load and hard acceleration when pulling 5th wheel camper. Without camper trans is quiet except for a rattle in 5th gear when accelerating from low rpm. There is no vibration through shifter.

The repair shop said it is probably noise induced from the single mass flywheel.

Was the original flywheel dual mass? Could the single mass flywheel cause the noise?

The dual mass flywheel wasn't used until late 2005 on third generation trucks. If your truck is stock, it would have had a single mass flywheel. I would suspect that your rattle noise is because of the dual disc upgrade, which in my opinion would be normal under a hard pull. You essentially have two flywheels - one bolted onto the crankshaft and the other (an intermediate plate) that is sandwiched between the two clutch discs.

My truck is an 02 with a six speed with 290,000 miles on original clutch and it makes the same sounds as you are describing.
