Hello everyone I have a 2003 2500 4x4 Ho cummins with the nv5600 165500 miles and as everyone by now knows they like the castrol syntorq gear oil. Well my question is for my 98 dakota 2 wheel v6 3. 9 with an nv 4500. As far as i know an nv4500 is the same for dakota and ram. Well i called the dodge dealer to get gear oil for my ram and dakota to change this weekend and the sales guy would not sell me the castrol syntorq for my dakpta cause he swears that the computer says that my dakota takes 5w30 motoroil. I almost fell backwards considering that i have ran syntorq in this transmission since 25000 miles when i first changed it. I now have 105000 miles on the truck. I know the site is geared for rams with a cummins but I hope someone can help with my question. Thanks in advance for any replies. Also the reason for going to the dealer to purchase the syntorq was because standard transmission and gear dont sell catrol syntorq anymore only amsoil, not kicking amsoil just prefer to stick with what I know. Thanks again.

The trans in your Dakota would be an NV3500 which Dodge says takes "Manual Transmission Fluid". I can call my Dodge parts man tomorrow and ask, but I think your guy's right on the 5W-30.

The only other manual transmission they offered calls for 75W90 GL5.

Everything I've read says to use Castrol Syntec 75-90. Nothing ever mentions 5W 30.
I think the parts guy is confused or talking over his head.

If it's the NV3500 then according to Dodge your supposed to use this:

#ad

Which is the same fluid we're supposed to use in our NV5600.

Thanks for the reply. I always thought I was using the correct oil and had trouble understanding how if castrol syntorq was the wrong choice how I had gone this long because the transmission is for sure a nv 4500 like I say im not sure if there is a difference between ram and dakota nv 4500 ( don't think so ). The picture you posted is exactly what I was trying to purchase. Cause thats what the 2500 calls for. The guy at dodge didnt understand why I wanted six quarts for my 2500 either he said it was not good to overfill the transmission. I just kept quiet haha.

According to my research the Dodge Dakota used the following transmissions:

3. 9L... 89/91... NP535... ATF

3. 9L... 92/99... AX15... Toyota built... 75/90 wt.

3. 9L 00/03... NV3500... Mopar#4874464

From what I remember... the NV5600 uses Synchromesh (a type of fluid), not Castrol Syntorque (a specific brand name fluid). Syntorque is the recommended fluid for the NV4500.

Couple points...

* Castrol Syntorque is a manual transmission fluid with a 75w90 gear oil viscosity.

* Synchromesh is also a manual transmission fluid, but it is equivalent to a 5w30 motor oil in viscosity. It is actually close to a 70w80 gear oil viscosity.

I want to remember the NV3500 uses Synchromesh, like the NV5600. You should be able to find Pennzoil Synchromesh fluid at most parts stores...
