Nv4500 Pop Out Problem

I HAVE A`95 3500 WITH NV4500. EVERY SO OFTEN IT SLIPS OUT OF 5TH. . IN READING TDR. I FIND THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH THIS UNIT. I AM PUTTING A BANKS STINGER PLUS ON TRUCK. 2 QUESTIONS. WHAT CLUTCH TO USE AND SHOULD I REPLACE THE 5 GEAR SHAFT WITH AN UPGRADED PIECE OR GO IT THE WAY IT IS ?? WILL BE TOWING UPWARDS OF 11,500LBS. . THANKS.

Standard trans upgrade

Right after I bought my 3500, 5 speed and began towing a 10,500# 5th wheel, my 5th gear quit.



If your having pop out problems and not towing, I'd guess towing will be worst. I'd go with the upgrade so you don't have 5th go while your in the boondocks somewhere.



Mine went out while I was on a camping trip inside of 100 mile radius of home, so I just putted back in 4th at 50MPH.

Your problem sounds like the shift fork. On 5th gear there are nylon inserts on the fork. Heavy wear comes from holding the shifter while going down the road. Not necessarily why it happened to you. Put in new pads and you should be fine. While in there you can decide if it needs anything else.
