Hello,

Just joined the TDR. Looks like a great source of info. Look forward to getting to know you guys.

I have a problem with my BRAND NEW 2500. With less than 1000 miles on it, the 5spd now pops out of 5th gear when there is slack in the drive line. Under a pull or hold-back, it does fine. But will generally pop out of 5th gear when in "slack" for a few seconds. I've read of the problems with the 5th gear and wonder if this is the same problem (nut) that I'm having. Does anyone have an opinion?

The dealer will be looking at it next Monday but I'm just wondering if I should consider other options for it. Is it ok to drive it for a week?

Thanks for any help,

Chris

No, the problem with the 5th gear nut is that it backs off, allowing the gear to slip off of or shear its splines, freewheeling on its shaft. When that happens, it feels like the transmission is in neutral, even though the shifter is still in 5th. I don't have any idea what is causing your problem, but it's not the same thing. Sorry.

Same problem here.

That was the exact same problem I had with my truck. I brought it back to the dealer and they replaced the transmission. I only had 20,000 miles on the truck when they replaced it. No problems since.

5th Gear Nut....

While we're talking about new trucks and the NV4500... If I remember correctly they have fixed the 5th gear nut prolbem??? or am I just dreaming???? If so. . anyone know when they did this???

Thanks,

Bryan

TractorNut, I was told by Doug, shop foreman at Enterprise Engine, that the 5th gear nut problem was fixed on 2001 & up... . I took his word for it. I've thrown over 450 HP at it, under load, quite a few miles, and my 5th gear nut is still on there.

One more thing, TractorNut, I see you live in Texas. You're in luck... Standard Transmission is in Texas, and they got all sorts of goodies, like rebuilt NV4500's with stronger shafts, etc.

Jumping out of gear is usually caused by a problem with a shift rail that is bent, misaligned or worn. Since your truck is new, we can probably rule out "worn". You are going to have to take it to the dealer; the problem will not fix itself.

Thanks!

Thanks everyone for the comments. It will be at the Dealer on Monday.

BTW Dave, I live right up the road from you in Wytheville. I work in Blacksburg. We should have lunch some time. On me.

Hi Chris, I am also a new member and have learned a lot from these guys before joining. I am sure I will be learning a bunch more in the future. Seem like a Super group.

I had the same problem when I bought my first truck. A 2000, 2500. At 200 miles it would keep jumping out of 5th when coasting. The dealer replaced the 5th gear and put in a new syncro mesh. Never had a problem since. Just traded it today for a 2002 3500.

Hope this helps.

Kingram-I am curious as to what the dealer finds. Please keep us informed. My new truck(6800 miles)jumps out of 3rd gear on a downshift, and has since new. The thought of taking it to the dealer and having them say"We don't know why it does it,it'll be ok,just drive it,you've got a warranty"makes me sick to my stomach.

Can not replicate problem!!

Took the truck to the dealer this morning and had them take me on to work. Called about 3:30 and heard those most endearing words "Cannot duplicate the problem". Well, I went down there mad as he#$ and was going to give them a piece of my mind. They were very nice and the tech dropped everything to ride with me. Well, 30 miles later, I could not get it to pop out of gear. They agreed for me to tow the camper back down tomorrow and we'd try it again. Well, going home from the dealership, it popped out twice!!! I was so mad I wanted to get out and shoot it right there on the road.

Oh well, there is always tomorrow. I'll keep you posted on what the issues are.

Thanks for all the comments.

Chris

My truck jumped out of 5th mainly on a long hill. Find a good steep one, do about 60 or so and let right off it. Mine would pop out 2 or 3 times before I got to the bottom. Give that a try and see what happens.

Deja vu.

Kingram,

What you describe, is exactly what happened to me. I called them on the way home, after the second time that it did it. They told me that they would order the parts. A week later, I had a new transmission. No problems since. Hope you have the same luck.

Looking Better

Well, finally got it to pop out for the tech. He said "I'll just order you another transmission" Should be in on Friday.

Again, thanks guys for all of your comments. I'll let you know how this one goes.

Chris

sounds to me like a bad syncro unit for fifth gear. we have a couple of old farm trucks that do the same thing. however these trucks are used hard and have had a lot of miles on them... it is odd that a new truck should do this, however not out of the question. probably just a bad manufactured part.
