Transmsision shift problem

Hi All,

After pulling my dads 10k chipper for 100 miles in mostly 4th I have no more 3rd or 4th gear. I have only driven it about 1,000 miles in the last year as I have been working on other projects and have a daily.

I thought it was odd that 3rd gear the shifter would wobble a lot.

No grinding or clunking but as soon as I lost it when empty I drove home 1 mile. The only company I see advertising is Standard transmission out of Fort Worth. The local shop said they have only done 2 in the last 10 years. :-(

I feel I want some upgrades done while the transmission is opened up. I have about 168k on the truck so it should not be in bad shape, I had the fluid changed last year.

Any input on how bad it is gonna be and about trusting the local transmission shop with it?

Thanks,
Joe

A lot of people rebuild their NV4500s in their garages so if the mechanic can read instructions and use a feeler gauge a local shop should be able to do it. OTOH, Standard Transmission is my go to shop. The way to upgrade a NV4500 is to install a 6 speed from a newer truck.

When I typed my last post my mind was oriented to upgrades that make the transmission stronger. A fully splined main shaft and gear is an upgrade I would insist on.

I'd also drop in a six speed. To many fails on the 4500 even with beefed up units.
A money pit in my eyes, like Land Rover.

A 6 speed conversion was economically beneficial to me, but for most it is an unneeded expense, especially if the truck is only driven 1000 miles a year. There is only one part I'm aware of the "beefs up" an NV4500, a bigger input shaft. Of all the transmissions I went through I never broke one.
