Hi all,

I am doing some research to determine the feasibility of sticking a NV4500 behind the Cummins in my HMMWV. I have been planning on using a built 47RH, but a 5 spd would be very stout and unique in a HMMWV, so I am considering it.

One of the issues I am running into is how to shift it because the width of the vehicle and the position of the transmission will put the shifter high and to the right of the driver. I think that would be very awkward with the stock shifter. I know there are short-throw shifter kits out there for the later NV4500's, but that would only help a little bit. Was the NV4500 ever used in a cab-over truck or something like else that would have a shifter positioned lower and closer to the engine?

Any thoughts?

No the NV4500 would of been used only in pick-up trucks or similar size vehicles. They use bigger trans in med and heavy duty trucks.

If New Venture is still around contact them to see if they have different shift linkage for the NV4500.

With the HMMWV platform an automatic should hold up just fine with a good valve body and convertor.

The biggest problems with them (MIL versions) stock is the 6. 2/6. 5 engine.

Also remember that with the gear reduction in the diffs and portals, the amount of torque and strain put on the engine / transmission is less.

If you can make a manual work then great, but not sure how it would be to drive since the driver side floor pan is so tight as it is.

(BTW I was a US ARMY wheel mechanic for 6 years that pulled many HMMWV engine packs and transmissions)

Thanks guys. The TH400 is holding up OK so far, but that's at stock power levels. I think I will shred it with the addition of a #100 plate, turbo, injectors, etc... A built 47RH is looking like my best option for durability and overdrive. I am going to use a couple of pressure sensors to control OD and TC lock-up. Behind that, I am thinking about an Atlas transfer-case. The Dodge HD case would hold up OK, but it is so big and bulky that it would create some clearance issues.

Should be no problem, just modify the stick to make the knob come out in a comfortable position. I've bent sticks on several occations when I didn't like the relative location of the shifter.
