does anyone know?do i have to use this castrol syntec75/90 fluid?or the mopar stuff thats over 80. 00 for 4 quarts. because i already bought moble full synthtic 75/90gl-5. but i dont want to use it unless i am sure. i put a clutch in my truck and i got it all put back together. im just waiting on this. thanks

Do not use any oil that is GL-5 rated. It will ruin the transmission. I believe it reacts with the brass in the syncros. I'm sure others will offer advice. Amsoil makes a good oil that is made for the NV4500 and it is cheap. Pete

While at one time the free sulfur in GL-5 rated oils would attact brass, sulfur is bound in compounds that prevents it from doing that in newer oils...

I have been running Pennzoil Synthetic 75w90 in my dad's NV4500 for well over 200k with absolutely no problems. It is a GL-5 oil... and in an email I sent to Royal Purple, they stated that even their GL-5 rated fluids meet GL-4 corrosive ratings...

I will be changing his trans over to RP when he comes up for his next change as I am really impressed with their 85w140. I would also recommend Pennzoil's Synthetic 75w90 oil too... it usually cost around $7/quart.

Options for NV4500 fluid

I ran Amsoil for around 45k B4 changing to Valv Syncromesh - its GL4 rated . The Amsoil gave really clunky shifts . Valv. Synchro is much smoother . The only non-dealer source for Syntorq is Standard Transmission in TX . About $55 /gal last time I checked prices . If you checked the syncro rings on your NV4500 and you saw brass your home free w/ any fluid . The reason for Synrorq was the use of a composite material in the syncro rings which was attacked by the higher levels of sulpur& phos. in GL5 fluid . Thats per this forum et al severaL YEARS AGO .

Standard Transmission uses Amsoil now. I called them for the Castrol Syntorq and they told me they no lomger use it. You can get the Castrol from

Quad 4x4. Pete

i've been running royal purple 75/90 maxgear for maybe a year and it's doing good in my truck, pepboys sells maxgear for $10 a quart around here, i think napa has it too, can't remember how much though

i found amsoil75/90. it shifts better than ever. i didnt go with royal purple because it says on the bottle gl-4and gl-5. the amsoil says gl-4,and it states right on the bottle its for the nv4500 no other oil even valvaline moble any of them. just amsoil. i will tell you something it use to grind a little goinginto 3rd gear when it was cold no matter how slow i shift. now it dont matter i can speed shift it no grinding just like new. thanks

Hello

I just could not resest a comment.

I have been using Royal Purple in my 1996 Dodge, five speed and all other drive train components for seven years and 127,000 ML, with outstanding service.

Thanks,

JL

I don't run any special additives or oils, just the Mobil 80w90 is around the shop. Haven't had any problems at all with it.

Howdy,

I use AMSOIL MTG 75W-90 in my NV4500 and am verry happy with it. Infact my 93 is AMSOILed from bumper to bumper and I would't use anything else.

Redline MT90. While I run the RP engine oil in everything I own, including the truck, I have raced on Redline in trannies and pumpkins for years. Including a 6 hour endurance race on a gear type LSD (extreme heat) without a cooler.

I was at a local Dodge garage the other day and saw one of their mechanics ask the stock man for NV4500 lube. He was given four quarts of Amsoil.

FWIW,

Bob
