Looking for everybody's experience with nv4500 transmission and since this is a first gen forum the gretrag mileage before blowing it up and type of use and horsepower your putting.through it.

Igot around 200 K when mine took a dump and I switched to the nv4500 , how ever I think my rearend let go didn't help

I've got 132181 miles on my NV4500HD. I will be glad to let you know when or if I have any trouble with it. Towing about 8000 lbs was not a problem. Launch in 1st gear is the only problem I had - you might get to 5 mph so I no longer use first for anything towing or non towing. I've added a manual trans filter (well worth it) and a drivers side trans cooler, also have a trans temp gauge that reads both rear diff and trans through a DPDT switch. Temps towing about 225, non towing max 175.

My Getrag was a fully rebuilt unit to the tune of $5000. Got 30,000 miles out of it running 17,000 gross and 278/720 @ the wheels through it and it has more noises than a shevy now. That was swapped for a 5600.

I believe most of the Problem's that have come up with the Getrag is Lugging it down while driving . I think if you keep the RPM up over fill it by a qt. and run it that it will be a Great Transmission. Now to be Honest I'm a Auto guy but I have a Friend that is Knee Deep into Getrag's and Loves them .

I was aware of this issue and I can honestly say I did not lug mine. RPM was always over 1750 before I walked on it. Also I was overfilled by 1qt. I also ran synthetic from day 1 as I wanted to ensure I would get a long life out of it.

In saying that, I also run my trucks hard. I am not afraid to run pedal on floor up the side of a mountain with 12,000 behind me so I am sure that didnt help my cause....lol

Well It's Called Pedal to the Floor till it Break's then build it Stronger right :)

Yes sir! :) That is along with the theory of if you see a new Ford at half hill, be sure to get past him before hill top so he can see you gaining on him all the way up the mountain and then blow past him in a Gen 1 Dodge. :D
