Does anybody have any clues as to why my transmission went south? Any insite would be helpfull.

rodeorig, first of all, welcome to the TDR, about your handle, roughstock, roping? Now on to the transmission, we need a little background. Did you lose 5th gear, if so that's not a uncommon problem with the NV4500, there are fix's that are very good and some that are little better than the flawed factory setup. If you work your truck in 5th gear (pulling horses at freeway speeds would qualify) or let the RPM fall below 1750 so on a regular basis while in 5th you are in the high risk catagory for 5th gear problems. Some have had problems even without the afore mentioned contributing factors.

You might try a search with the key words, "NV4500" or "5th gear" and read for a while, lots of info there.

These guys are east of Columbus a few miles. They have everything you need for a rebuild or brand new sitting there. They can also give you a good idea about what happened.

If you schedule ahead, you have a REALLY good chance of only being down a day.

Thanks, for the input. F. Y. I. I rope calves and steers. Not just a hobbie but a way of life, at least in the summer.
I was pulling a horse trailer but it was empty. I was, repeat was, on my way to Georgia to buy a Harley went all of a sudden comming up Jellico Mt. in Tn. the transmission gave out. I took it to the local Dodge dealer and their tech. said that the transmission went south. I had a sneaking suspicion that 5th gear might have went out. The tech said it was more that 5th gear and a new transmission was in order.

I had a pretty similar situation take place yesterday. Me and a buddy were heading to a roping and 3 miles from the arena, I think my transmission took a dump. We were heading up a hill, I was in 5th gear around 1600-1700 rpm and I went to downshift to 4th, I put it in 4th and it felt like I was in neutral, then the clunking of metal began. We were going around a blind curve so I tried to keep going to a place where it would be safe to stop, I tried a few different gears, finally I got it into 1st and it went a few hundred feet, clunking the whole way then that finally gave out. We had a guy pull us up to a turnout and called AAA and had them haul the truck back home while we went to the roping. The only weird thing is that when I unhooked my trailer and was waiting for my buddy to come pick up the trailer and horses, I was able to get into 4th gear and move my truck away from my trailer. What does it sound like happened? Anyone have any recommendations for a shop to fix whatever it is that went wrong. The truck is in So Cal at my parents, Hesperia to be exact, but I do need to get back up to Las Vegas in the next week or so, so Joe if you have any recommendations for a transmission guy in that area please let me know. Oh by the way the truck has about 220,000 miles on it.

Thanks
Kyle

I had a 4500 in a 98 that crapped out at around 80k. I had the cruise set on 80 rolling down the road jamming out ... bam that was it entirely. Hauled to the dealer the inspected it and said that a lower bearing had gone out and heated everything up. I asked if fluid level was ok. . yes. Why? Dunno!

New transmission under EX-warrenty.

rodeo- Do you trip steers or team rope? Dig that steer tripping. I just do outside cattle, haven't ever made it to a tripping.

Kyle, there is a guy in Boulder City who can put in the 5th gear/mainshaft fix and I'm sure he could do anything else the transmission needs. We have some of the parts here, and it's hard to tell what is wrong kuntil tearing it down. Std. Trans can ship stuff fast if needed.
