I'm sure this has been covered, and i apologize for that, but we pulled my buddys trans out this evening and found excessive play on the input shaft. The previous owner/repair shop welded the 5th gear nut on. Is the mainshaft scrap metal now, or can I grind the weld/nut off and re-use? Thanks, Chris

Thanks guys for the replies. We cut the welds and got it apart. The truck has 400K on it, so my bud wanted to reuse the mainshaft to save $$$. However, the rear bearing came off by hand, so a new mainshaft is a must now. I have 2 questions, one, how does one go about pulling the bearing off of the 'nose' of the countershaft? How much oil do y'all like to run in these? Do you overfill by a quart like we like to do the old Getrags? Thanks!

Bust the cage off the rollers, and either snag the lip with a locking puller, or take a grinder and make some notches and pull from there, or if careful, grind almost all the way through and finish with a chisel.

I just rebuilt a nv4500 with a standard trans main shaft, and I can tell you that the bear just drops on and off of their main shaft, I was not happy about that and 5th gear fits pretty lose on the "update main shaft"

We started reassembly this evening and I have a question. The thrust washer...the "upper" one, on 2nd or 3rd gear has a recess in the mainshaft for the pin. However, the "lower" one that the rear bearing seats against doesn't have a recess in the mainshaft. What's the deal on that? We noticed on disassembly that there was a pin in the slot but it didn't fit into anything.
Thanks guys.
