have a question on my shift top my transmission will not stay in 5th 0r 4th gear when i let off the throttle the synchro sleaves for both gears require a pry bar to move either into gear or out of gear they arent un reasonably hard to move the detent seems to be locking the sleeves perfectly , i have replaced the detent springs and struts in both 5th gear and 4th gear and i have also replaced the springs on the shift rails but the transmission still will not stay in either gear . i just recently rebuilt the transmission and set shaft end play for the counter shaft at . 004 and the main shatft at . 006 what else can i check

Is the bearing in flywheel a snug fit on pilot shaft? I have a 57 Chev that jumps out of high if you don't hold it in gear. Beleive it was auto engine and prior owner forgot to install pilot bushing. The old Willys Jeep 3 speeds like to jump out of 2 nd gear coming down hills, thats usually bad syncro or bearings allowing shafts to move. One of my Getrags jumped out of 5 th do to way to much play between gear and rear of trans as I recall, foggy memory. Rebuild cured it.

more then likeley from your discription Id say the shift collars & gears ... ...

is there any bearing noise?

the up side is that the 5th gear stuff can be changed in the vehicle easily

take care

the 5th shift lug inside the case was bent just enough that the synchro sleeve wasnt moving far enough to fully engage the 5th gear synchro clucth

Fork with Lug, (5th) this is the 5th gear fork inside the main case. The lug engages on a tab cast as part of the reverse gear fork. il will try to put a picture on if you need me to mine was bent just a tiny bit probly from the pry bar :-laf
