When I worked at the dealer many of the manual transmissions were hard to get. It was damn near impossible to order the right parts for them due to the parts books being very misleading. After a couple of run-ins with this, it prompted me to never rebuild one again. It just cost me too much in tied-up hoist time and time is money for dealer techs.

This was coupled with the problem of only having to rebuild 1 or 2 a year made it very difficult to meet the warranty time given by DC( about 6 hours for overhaul).

I think these two factors causes the demand for re-mans to exceed the supply. It was the same way for Jeeps.

it does concern me a bit. I am putting close to 2 x the stock power down and hope the transmission holds. If it does go, i will somehow get a medium duty manual to fit.

I suspect the greatest issue relative to NV-5600 trannies or parts are those related to DC warranty claims, where parts must come from authorized DC sources.

I think there are significant rebuilts and parts available from non-DC sources and rebuilders. It's an issue to be aware of, and perhaps concerned about IF you are modded in a way that places greater than rated stress on the transmission - but it wouldn't be covered by DC warranty then anyway... ;)

Heaven forbid it become a huge problem (and I know there's some already on TDR experiencing said problem) I suppose we could always ask Ma MOPAR to make our monthly installments while our trucks are out of commission and supply us with an equivalent replacement truck until the proper parts are procured.

Being that I mod my truck and if I ever get to the point that I have to rebuild the trans, I'm not going to the dealer. I will go after market. If no more parts are their then I might put a Allison trans in the truck. Maybe Marco can program the Smarty to control the Allison. Oo.

Not scared, but I am concerned. I'm stock and have a 100k/7yr service contract with Dodge. If it breaks during that time, Dodge will have to figure it out. I would take a G56 if I had to as I don't mind the higer ratio for towing.

Scared probalby isn't the right word - annoyed is. I agree the after market will probably step up, but to me it shows that DC isn't really concerned with customers that already purchased. Heck even Microsoft supported Win 95 up to a few months ago, and that was a $200 software program and not a $30k plus truck.

Seems like I read somewhere that auto manufacturers had to keep parts available for 10 years after the model year, but I can't find it now. Anyone heard of that?

I would just suggest if you are worried about your truck beind down any sort of time waiting on a transmission, and since they cost about 2300-2500 for a reman unit... ... . I would suggest having one as a spare part.

Exactly what I did. . just picked up my original, that went kaboom last spring, today! Figured they are this hard to get ahold of now, whats it going to be like in 2 or 3 more years? Whats another $3k laying around the garage? As long as I don't grenade the one in there now, I'm going to stick this one in around the end of the year to make sure it is OK, then get the other one checked out. Have a local shop( believe it or not) that actually seems to know thier crap!

HMMMmmm - well, lessee - I already carry a spare LP and pusher pump, as well as a spare VP-44 - close to $1500 right there... I've considered a spare ECM and PCM - and now a spare transmission too?

HELL, might as well just buy a complete spare TRUCK for parts - or perhaps look into a competing brand with fewer in-depth failure issues? ;) :-laf

NAH - I've bought about ALL the spares *I* intend to, and IF this truck gets THAT difficult to obtain parts for or keep running, there will be some OTHER brand in my garage!

Very well said, You typed exactly what I was going to.

I refuse to worry about things I cannot control. NV5600s are available aftermarket last time I checked and they can be rebuilt. Not a big deal.

Then medium duty manuals are a option as well. I wouldn't mind a 7 speed double overdrive.

1) They'll never get my NV5600 and replace it with a G56 and it's attendant DMF. I believe the NV5600 is a better transmission.

2) Despite problems with DC and warranty transmissions, I just can't believe that parts and replacement trannies won't be readily available via the aftermarket very soon. If I can find NOS grill for my 36 yo car, I'm pretty sure it won't be a problem finding parts for a very recently, mass produced domestic truck transmission. Anyone know how many NV5600's Dodge sold over the 5 years these transmission's were used?

Dave

I believe the weakest part of NV5600 is the "pocket bearing" in the input shaft. It holds the output shaft, and is the tiniest bearing in this transmission.

I don't know how customiized (hard to find) it is, but I would replace that, and the pilot bearing at every clutch job. ANd perhaps the needle bearings under 6th gear, but that would require more dissasembly.
