How hard is it to swap in a NV5600 I understand the driveshaft lengths will have to be modified. Can you just go to a junkyard and get driveshafts off a newer model that had a NV56oo in it?

Neibe,

I replaced my 96 4500 with a 5600. No probem at all. I didn't look whether yours was a 4wd or 2wd but heres what you need.

First of all get a transmission jack if possible because the 6spd is huge!

I used my floor jack with an adaptor on it but it is a lot scarier to handle than the 5spd. The 5spd is 200# the 6spd is 380# and 6 inches longer. The wrecker I bought from did not have the drive shafts so I shortened my rear driveshaft exactly 6" and have yet to install my front shaft that has to be lengthened 6". Shortening and balancing my 2 piece rear shaft cost about $120 Canadian. The front is about $200 CDN since they use a new piece of tubing. The 5600 I have was out of a 2002 it has the 1 3/8 input shaft. I used the stock clutch and existing 13" flywheel. I traded the wrecker my transmission, clutch, flywheel, bellhousing, shifter, crossmember, transfer case shifter for his like + $2500.

You will need

- 1/2" shim plate for the starter motor

-flywheel (if it is the 13" version) I think it is after 2000 models

-clutch ( if 1/38 input version) as above

-98 up crossmember (any) 4500/5600/and auto is interchangable

94-97's wouldn't work ( the 98 ups will fit in the same holes)

-bellhousing

-shifter

-transfer case shifter if 4x4

-98 up center floor consol for cosmetic reasons( now you have 4 cup holders!

- you will have to put some aluminum rivited to the floor boards and relocate the transfer case shifter hole a bit to the left. The 6spd does not have anywhere to mount the 4x4 shifter bracket to like the 5spd. It is mounted to the floorboards instead.

- you will have to lengthen the speedo pickup wire 6" so it can reach the transfer case. There is no pickup on the transmission so I don't know what the 2wd's do.

I think that was it. It sounds like a lot, but is really no big deal if you have a wrecker willing to sell or trade you all the parts + cash.

It took me about 6-7hrs, but I have'nt put in my front shaft yet and have not done the mods to my floor boards yet. I'm still running it as a 2wd and am waiting for the wrecker to get another 6spd so I can get the front driveshaft.

The slave cylinder will work,

I can't remember if the fork was the same on both. I traded my bellhousing etc. for his 5600 so I wasn't paying attention to that part.
