Archived NV5600 filler plug removal

Drained fluid by removing PTO cover. Put cover back on with RTV/Silicone. What do I use to get the fill plug out?



I tried different sized combinations of alan wrenches with no success.



I looked in the Service Manual and it just says something like remove the plug and fill with fluid when reassembling.



See my sig for specifics of truck if that makes a difference.

I need the truck for transportation tomorrow if at all possible. I know some of you have changed your fluid - what did you use?



If it is an alan wrench, what size do I ask for and where can I get one?



25K miles and fluid was still fairly golden brown but had noticeable amount of metallic cream in fluid.

If I remember correctly its a 10 mm allen wrench, if you dont have one you can use a bolt that is double nutted and turn it out with a wrench.

Fill plug is 17mm. You'll need a BIG allen driver, or a bolt with a 17mm head. If you use the bolt method, you'll need two nuts on it, and be sure to make them very tight. This will be the part where you apply torque to get the fill plug out. Am I making sense?



There's one more way to fill it if you don't have a 17mm allen or a bolt. Take apart the center console inside the cab, and get the shift tower removed from the transmission. Just dump the oil in from the top. However, getting the exact amount of oil in it will be tricky, since the fill plug (level checker) will still be installed.



Obviously, your best bet is to use the fill on the side of the trans.

I've run into this 17mm fill plug on several different brands of vehicles and found that the two nut method doesn't always work, the nuts come off before the plug. Welding the nuts onto the bolt fixed that right up.

I went to a pawn shop and found a 17mm allen real cheap. I think I paid 1. 50 for it. Eric

Thanks for the help. This sure is a great group, but that just goes along with a really awesome truck. Sears calls them Hex Key Wrenches when they are 17MM as opposed to allen wrenches. Go figure.



One interesting thing on refill. After 8 pints started oozing back out hole. Had to jack drivers side up to get almost 9. 5 pints in.

Wonder if that is why some guys have stiffer shifting than others - fluid level variances.
