Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) nv5600 fluid change ?'s

I want to change the fluid out in my nv5600. I went to a Dodge dealer to find out how much the fluid is. $19. 85/quart. What other options are there? And is there a filter I need to get or anything else? I am guessing I can just remove the pto cover and drain it that way. What kind of rtv should I use to reseal it? Thank in advance. T.

I have 60k miles on redline mtl. I can get it for about 9. 00 qt. others may use other stuff. but its worked for me. driver side pto to drain do the extra work take off cover get out all that you can, clean magnet that you find in the ditch below gears. there is a big debate on refill amount/ and over fill ammount I always put in all that I can in the fill plug and close and than keep the top bolt on pto cover and add 1. 5 extra in the transmission. I bought a little oil squirt can that has a small flex tube that fit the bolt opening.

Geno's sells a filter unit that goes under the pto cover. It's a good idea but certainly not necessary.

Royal Purple Synchromesh has done well for me. After draining and installing PTO cover I would remove the shift tower and put 10 qts in to help insure the rear main bearing getting oil. The design of the 5600 leaves little way for oil to get to that bearing, putting more oil in should help.

Pennzoil Synchromesh is same as Mopar stuff (much cheaper though). Available at NAPA, AutoZone and probably others. Amsoil also makes an oil (called MTF or something like that). I have used the Amsoil and the Pennzoil and couldn't tell any difference.



You can drain by simply removing the bottom PTO cover bolt, but as DIESELWRKS stated, it is better to remove cover. I have overfilled through the top PTO cover bolt. Some overfill by tilting truck. Have never filled through the shift tower. Not sure about how necessary it is to overfill, but I have always done it on others recommendations.

I bought Amsoil for significantly less than what the dealer wanted for the Mopar stuff... . and I would do it again.

Redline has out a new oil call MT90 which is slightly thicher their MTL. Last oil change I went to the MT90 and I like it better then the MTL. Both run around $9 per quart.

Is the mt90 the same viscosity as mtl(5w-30) I think. I was told to make sure to stay with that or problems could be had on down the road.

just attempt to get all the gunk you can out of it and dont forget the magnet. having small brass specs in it is normal from sincro's wear.

Got it all done. Thanks for all the help. I got about 4 quarts in through the regular plug and another 1. 5 or so through the top pto bolt hole. I will see how it shifts in the morning.



One thing that I am worried about is after I got all the fluid out and the bottom cleaned out I couldn't find a magnet. I felt around everywhere and as far back as I could reach. Is this something I should be worried about. Like if it slid back towards the tailhousing or something. Also while I was under there I noticed that my u-joint was starting to go bad at the front diff. #@$%! Oh well back to the part store in the morning.

Here is a clip from the Redline spec sheet on MTL/MT90.



Red Line MTL is classified as a 75W/80W gear lubricant satisfying the API Service requirements of GL-3 and GL-4. MTL also satisfies motor oil viscosities SAE 5W/10W/30, and the viscosity requirements for ATFs. MT-90 is a 75W90 GL-4 and also satisfies motor oil viscosities SAE 10W/15W/40.
