Well the ole truck is in the shop again... was planning this for a bit... the 5th gear is clashing like there is no synchro at all in that gear... the others are good but a little stiff... truck has 73 K on it and since they are not making the trannies anymore and I just had a new engine rebuild and new clutch,... . best to get this done with... .

So save for the axles and body, I will have a new truck for under $10 K total... .

Putting the fst coolers on it and new Redline MTL fluid... since the fast colers add 2 quarts, I have 8 quarts total for them to fill with...

Will let you know how it shifts when it is done. . should be by saturday... . hope...

Just wondered how you wear out a Cummins engine and manual trans. in 73k miles. I Am on my 3rd CTD all at least 200k to 300k pulling heavy loads all the time, and never even think about engine failure. Or did you just have bad luck. I guess that happen. Good luck with your new stuff. Larry.

Don't know what is happening with my transmission... all of a sudden it has a bad 5th gear... all others are good and I don't hear any bearing noise... . so since the no more manufacture of the N5600, best to rebuild it and have all new stuff... .

Yeah you're right on the bad luck with the engine... beside the crack to have to rebuild, got a mexican block so that should be that... the engine was working fine and power was good and everything... just a pesky bad casting...

I had all or most of the synco's go out in my NV5600 in what seems like just a couple hundred miles (trip from Seattle to Portland and back). Tried to get an exchange unit but none could be had so I pulled it out and sent it to a shop in Portland. The big NV shop in Seattle did have the parts or tools to handle the 5600.

How was the shifting before vs after the rebuild?

Brian

Mine did the same thing at 99000 miles, all the sudden 5th clashed on every shift if you didn't double clutch. Had the 5th synchro assy replaced by Standard Trans in Fort Worth. It still isn't right, will some times come out of 2nd if you are driving slow, on and off the throttle in traffic for example. I was thinking about replacing it with later unit with bigger input shaft, but may look into a new truck instead before the new emissions standards go in effect.

Before the rebuild when the syncro's went out every gear would clash. After the rebuild things still clash some, running Redline MTL (6 quarts, I have fast coolers). I was expecting some clashing since it is basically a new transmission and things need to get broken in. I have since drained 2 quarts of oil and added 2 quarts of Lucas oil stabilizer and that has made the most improvement in the shifting. I would say that now with the lucas in the transmission it is shifting like it did way before the rebuild. I've always been suspicious of how thin the stock oil and aftermarket oils have been.

Oh just to let you know I had about 127K on the clock when the syncro's went.

So if you don't mind me asking what did the rebuild cost? So you had it rebuilt in a shop in Portland; do you have the name of the rebuild shop. I looked at the LV transmission supply pretty impressive. Did you just have the bearing and synro rebuild completed?

Don't'cha just hate it when you gotta prod every last bit of info out? Nothing offered ahead of time eh? :p

It cost me about $3200 including shipping. As far as I know it was a complete rebuild.

It would not have done me any good to try and give you a name since I did not have it at work, here it is.

Well I just got the tear down price quote for my 5600...

Seems I have an Early version of the large diameter 5600 which now they don't make parts for ... so, they are getting parts for like an 02 truck... . supposedly the gears and synchros were redesigned then so that is what I am getting... Having the Fast coolers installed right there and the redline MTL fluid... should take 6-7quarts... So the price he gave me was $3360 plus some shipping for some parts...

So NOW, rebuilt motor, rebuilt trans, new clutch, new turbo (the hybrid), ... all for about $10,000... . all in all, a new truck... beats the heck out of 50 grand or more... .
