My 2001 has been making noise in 4th gear lately. Not real loud yet, but was more noticeable yesterday after 100 miles or so on the highway.

I have only used factory fluid, no mods. other than winding 5th gear out to 2500 or 3k and towing 10k, no abuse, racing, etc.

I know little about how this thing works. The noise is hard to describe.

No other gear makes noise, and it seems to do it when hot, not as much or at all when cold.

Any help is appreciated.

Is the noise while driving in forth or when shifting into forth? If it is while driving in forth then it sounds like a bearing is going. If it is when shifting into forth then it sounds like the synco is going.

While Driving. Shifting is fine, and it was more noticeable on acceleration when hot, while holding speed it was not really there.

Has not done it since I got back in to town, so shorter trips don't warm it up enuf I guess. I will change the fluid as soon as I can and see if that helps.

Ok another question -

I am going to change out the transmission fluid this weekend, if I remove the drivers side pto cover, can I inspect the 4th gear and or bearing from this hole?

I will be cleaning it out and looking for naughty bits, but if I can inspect anything

at all while I have it off, that would be nice. I am looking at a 2000 mile trip to see a friend, and want to check as much out as I can.

Thanks!

You can see the gears on the front part of the countershaft through the PTO holes but bearings are not. There is a magnet that is in the bottom of the transmission that you can get to, sits in a bit of a low spot toward the back of the PTO opening, if anything is broken off it should be there.

You might want to try adding a quart or two of Lucas oil stabilizer when you refill. I added it to mine and after it got worked in it seems to real improve the shifting.
