Have about 40,000miles on my 04. 5 Was wondering if I should change the oil in the 6 speed? If so, where should I drain from, low hole on the pto cover? What oil do you guys recommend? What is the capacity? As always, thanks for the help guys!!
I like to remove the PTO cover so that I can get all the crap out of the bottom of the case. There is a magnet on the floor of the transmission which can be removed and cleaned with the cover removed. I also raise the back end of the truck so the transmission is level or even slightly low on the front. This gets all the oil from the back of the case and allows for extra oil when filling. When I did the first oil change there was a lot of junk in it. The second and third changes were very clean but I do it once a year because oil is cheaper than parts. I use Redline MTL.
Like posted I like to pull the Pto cover and clean the magnet. there will be metal on the magnet and cleaning it off insures it will ctch metal as it circulates in the oil. I believe the fill port is a 19mm or 3/4" allen key, or take a bolt with the right size head to fit into the plug and weld a nut on it and use that to remove and reinstall the fill plug.
I use Amsoil MTF, which is the only direct replacement for the factory fluid (the Pennzoil Syncromesh)
definately sounds like I should invest in a change then. Will probably do it this weekend. Klenger, thanks for the link info. Thanks guys for all the help and suggestions!!
it's a 17 mm allen key, I just bought one. I used the stuff you get from the dealer, took PTO cover off on the drivers side and put it back on with red permatex sealant and Loctite blue on the bolts... Jay
