Hi,

I have an '03, HO, 4X4, 6-sp and have been thinking about changing the gear oil, in the trans. I believe I read somewhere that PTO cover gaskets (reusable) were available thru the Chevy dealers. Does anyone know this to be true? Are those covers a universal fit, so that a Chevy cover would also fit a Dodge? Would they be available thru NAPA or another store?

I've, also, heard about a filter that mounts inside the right PTO cover & the gear oil gets "slung" into the filter and then drains back into the trans. Are those a good idea, or not? Who makes them & how much?

I appreciate your thoughts & suggestions.

Joe,

The 5600 doesn't have any gaskets on the PTO covers... or at least mine didn't. It was sealed from the factory with some RTV silocone, so I used the same when changing my fluid and it hasn't leaked a drop yet. The filters are available from Geno's garage and I've heard that they work well. These big trannies generate quite a bit of brass from synchro wear, so the filter is probably a good idea.

Banshee,

Thanks for the reply & the tip regarding the filters being available from Geno's.

I changed out my gear oil, once before & used the RTV. It worked fine, also. But, I do recall reading about reusable gaskets being available & it seems to me that they said the PTO covers were of universal size and that gaskets for one will fit others. Just like to know if that is true, or not, and where to get them.

Thanks, again, for your response.

PTO covers are standard the come in both 6-bolt (our trucks) and 8-bolt. The gaskets are available from any truck dealer or parts house. There are also various size shims made to fit the opening for setting backlash on PTO's.

The pictures are of my filter after 51,460 miles, the oil was very clean with only slight yellowing, it did show positive water at . 2%.

Looks to me like it was doing some good
