Has anyone tried to find or have an Overhaul/Repair and/or parts manual for the NVG5600 trans?? I have the 99 oem Dodge manual but was lookin for something that is much more focused on just the trans with better veiws. I have tried Blumenthals with no luck and have search the net for brands like Chilton, Helms and so on with no luck. I am trying to get prepared for the untimely death of my trans.

Thanks for any info you could give me

Well it is an early build so that is one strike, it already has chiped teeth, I found last time I changed oil and it is getting VERY noisy as of late, the oil is metalic brass and bearing material. At idle it is very noisy some times and not others. Before I could actually make smoke I used to short shift to make off boost smoke and short shift in general now I try to keep the rpm's up and not lug the trans, that makes horrific noise then. I was hoping to make another year before having to rebuild it but it doesn't look like it will happen, I would prefer to due to before it leaves me on the side of the road or sitting in front a sled and being towed off the track.

It will be sad to have to rebuild the trans before even putting brakes on for the first time.

Craig: If you need help, let me know! It's been so long since I've actually done anything meaningful in a garage...

Sounds like you ripped it up good...

I had my 5600 come apart on the coldest day of the year last year, the lube was like tar and I lost several gears. Dealer confirmed with NV that there was some bad gear sets out there.

I cannot type more about this as it sets me into a nasty ice cold flashback walking on the highway with -66 Windchill.

NVG 5600

Craig, I just pulled apart a 5600 on my shop floor. The only special tool need to get it apart is a 2 1/4 deep socket (very deep). I modified a socket by cutting off the square drive portion so it would slip 8" down the output shaft so I could loosen the nut off. I found that the Chrysler book is not to bad. I have not taken the main shafts apart yet but I understand that you need a 20 ton press to do so.

I have a 99 trans and a 2001 trans. The 99 was just over hauled by the dealership and has all the updated parts in it. The 2001 HO trans failed bad. I took it apart first so I could get out the 1 3/8 input from it. I am going to install it into the 99 trans. Looks like it will fit no problem.

To get to the input you must take the whole trans apart. Start at the tail shaft and work your way to the bell-housing.

If you do your trans I would get the 1 3/8 input as they are only $ 275. 00

I am hopping to just do bearings and shim it back to oem specs and leave it at that till I "have" to put parts in like gears then I would upgrade to the 1 3/8 input shaft and I would have to upgrade the clutch discs also. I hope that will be down the road some time.

Thanks for the offer I may have to take ya up on it.

I can see it now we could call it "Lets tear Craigs truck apart weekend" we could pull and rebuild the trans, o-ring the head, hang some twins on, throw a locker in the front diff... . oh wait that takes money. . dang I guess we will just fix the trans and be happy with that.

"Lets tear Craig's truck apart weekend"

I'm down with that idea...

Pull out the plastic and make some phone calls... you don't need money... just need credit!
