Custom gauge pod 1st run is done

Well, from day one since I bought the transmission from the place (No names yet. . if they burn me, I will light a fire on here. trust me) the second gear synchro has been all but there. . always a grind trying to get the thing into gear, and now reverse gear is doing it too... . Did I pay $2800 for a piece of junk?? They told me it was new, but why would it grind right out of the crate? Just does not make sense to me. I hope they will stand behind their product like Peter does his clutches. . As much as I love this transmission, and pull with it, and all the other good stuff, I think they need to help me out. . I got this transmission in around March, and this many problems from a so-called new transmission?? something is not right... y'all chime in and let me know what y'all think.

I am not going to post the name of the people whom I got the transmission from just yet, but if they want to play games, they will lose alot of business from here, I can gauruntee you.

check TSB's

Chris,

Check out this TSB. Somehow I don't see it on the TDR listing. Anyway, there were a lot of early 5600's with synchronizer issues. Seems I've even heard a few on 2003's, but I'm not sure it's the same issue. So, it could have been a new transmission when it was installed.

TejasDeezul- what do you do with your truck?

What do you all think? Did I read you right that the unit you purchased was new and sold to you through a distributor. My truck has ALWAYS grinded, since new. It seems like everyone says that this is a fact of life w/ the 5600. Reverse was always bad, 1st too. Just recently am I having trouble with second though. I've got an '02 w/ 67K on it. It's a bit embarrassing having to tell people how to drive my truck:

("always come to a complete stop, push in the clutch and wait a second, then put the truck in 1st (far left-top), then over to reverse(far right, top). Don't go straight to reverse... it won't happen. And if you don't wait before going into first it will :{ , and maybe not go in to that either. Also don't mind the loud clunck, that's just my worn out track bar, and the rattles, and I really do like my truck).

But, it's not broken... dealer would say it works fine, probably NV too. I'm living with mine, and I like the truck, I just wish it wasn't so "special".

So, if this distributor takes back your trans. and has too prove to NV that they got a bunk trans. and NV says not so then they are out and you are too. I guess my point is that I don't think there's anything crooked going on, and I hope that somebody will make it right for you.

Have you measured the clutch slave cylinder travel and/or the pilot bearing ID/input shaft OD clearance?

My clutch slave cylinder has only 19mm of travel and it's supposed to have a minimum of 24mm. I'll be changing it this weekend if the weather cooperates.....

I'm on my 2nd transmission after having the TSB performed on the original - neither the TSB nor the new transmission solved my shifting problems.

I recently switched to the Redline MTL and there was absolutely no change in the shifting as compared to the factory oil.

Good luck with the transmission, but I also want to mention that some do work. Mine has been flawless (knocking on wood now) since day 1. I have 55,000-miles on the OEM fluid and I won't be changing it until 100,000. The one difference that I might have is that I live in a warmer climate as I have heard some of these grind when cold. It does sound like you have more than a slight grind, however.

do u take off in second gear? if so, it may not be the syncros. and if the problem is with reverse as well then it sounds like it isn't the syncros. Most likely its the pilot bearring. The 5 speed ones are awefull with only one seal, so i went to the 6 speed bearrings with two seals, front and back, and still causes problems. I think the way we will be all going is with a oil light bronze bushing. They are much more dependable. I believe the first gens had them. Going to be trying them out soon. I've also been told to leave them in marvel mystery oil over night. The Kevlar bushings are cool, but u have to machine the flywheel to install them.

I've got 28,000 miles on my truck. Still has the stock gear oil in it. Second gear on my truck is still pretty stiff to engage but no grinding. One thing I've noticed is you have to pay more attention to your engine rpm and vehicle speed when downshifting the NV5600. If you try to downshift in to too low a gear for your speed the synchros will fight you. Upshifts are quite smooth on my truck and it does seem to be getting better as the miles roll by.

I've been starting off in second gear since day one, only time I use first is when towing the travel trailer.

As mentioned by NVR FNSH, the slave cylinder should be checked. If the clutch is not fully disengaged the synchros aren't going to help much.
