Anyone out there driving the new 6spd yet? How do they compare? Smoother shifting? Kinda early to be asking this I know but maybe... ... ... ... .

I figure if the new G56 was first offered or that's what is installed as of Jan 1, we probably won't see one till Feb sometime at earliest. My 2 cents

I am waiting to hear before I place my order But of course how long does it take to know if its a good transmission.

I'd give it several years - and at least 100,000 miles... ;) :D

How long did it take for reasonable analysis of the general quality of the NV-5600 - or has THAT even happened yet? ;)

Yes, you read my mind I figure if it turns out to be a real bad transmission we will know that soon But if it is a good transmission that will take longer to confirm.

It's so discouraging to hear about the lack of reliability of the Big 3

I still like my 84 Ford 4x4 still feels good when I am driving it. Yesterday I was in town so I stopped at Ford and Dodge dealership Just wanted to reaffirm the seat of the pants feeling, I really did not like the new Ford it just didn't feel like a new Truck let alone worth 40K the Dodge was lots better in my opinion.

Heck, perhaps Toyota will be out with their new FULL SIZE truck by then.

In another thread tomeygun mentioned he will have one on his lot around mid Feb.

Are there different rear end ratios available with the new transmission?

Ummm ... not so fast!

Asking at THIS point about hands-on transmission comparisons is much like trying to compare Bush's SECOND term to his FIRST! ;) :D

Someone stated (not sure who), that this G56 trans has been used by MB on their med. duty trucks behind the MB900 engins for a few years ... so, someone out there must know something about the trany's reliability.

As of right now you can't order the 4. 10's with the G56. Why? Maybe it's not strong enough to handle the torque load? If the "new and improved" PLASTIC end-capped intercooler is any indication of how DC "improves" things in the '05's I am not too confident in this new transmission... .

#1 Lower gears will likely take stress off the transmission, not add to it. Lower gears only affect the axleshaft's ability to take the torque load.

#2 The NV 5600 has a . 73:1 OD ratio. The G-56 has . 79:1. That's a 10% difference, or approximately the same as having 4. 10s with the NV 5600. In other words, 4. 10 is not necessary or even desirable with the G-56. I wish they'd bring the 3. 55s back.

According to a PDF that was posted on here some time ago the 3. 55's are listed again. I remember seeing that and coming unglued Oo.

I haven't been to the dealer yet, but I'll bet Tomeygun can tell us about their availability

Well according to the build function of the Dodge web site you can get 3. 73 or 4. 10 for 50 bucks more. Also there is a standard 6 speed and a HD 6 speed for 400 bucks more. SNOKING

ones things for sure, that website is totally wrong... There is only ONE 6-spd being made right now - the G56 - I have had alot of ?'s about why it is a HD trans... Thats just a details tag to the code of the transmission - DEG

And the DEG is free because it is the standard trans now, and the auto is $695 -- The 4. 10's with the G56 would be crazy on the highway, like 88 mph maxed out

3:55's ???

Tomeygun, As noted above any chance the 3:55 ratio will soon be available? With the AT or 6spd... ..... Would be a great mid-year option... Likely just a rumor but you never know... ... ...

PS: Wonder if the switch from 3:55/3:54 to 3:73's was engine driven or a result of what's available from the new axel supplier.

The AAM website lists for the AAM 1150 rear axle ( I think that is what Dodge uses) as having a Gear Ratio Range of 3. 54 - 5. 75, so it appears to be available from the axle supplier.

I think the switch to 17" wheels had something to do with it.

I would say dues to emissions, if you spool the turbo faster with a higher gear - then you will make less emissions... ?

The wheels had nothing to do with it because the the overall tire height is the same (almost) as the 16 inchers with the 75 series tire (17's had the 70 series tire)

I think.....

I'm sure your correct, but I just ordered a 2005 3500 today, and the sales rep said the code for the standart 6 speed was still valid. Maybe they will let you order it until the stock of NV5600 is exhausted. Don't know for sure, but my order is coming with the G56 6 speed...
