I have read all the archives on the previous discussions of the various recommended transmission fluids for the NV4500, but have seen little factual information pertaining to the NV5600. Should I stay with the recommended Texaco STF 1878 and/or Mopar 4874464, or is the Castrol Syntorq or Amsoil 2000 the way to go? GL-4 or GL-5? What are you all using and why?

Tom, On the 5600 the syncronizers require the fomulation of the Texaco lube. You should stick with it.

I'm using the Texaco fluid.

1) No one else makes any "approved" fluid.
2) I got 5 gallons from the local Texaco rep for $2. 18 a quart.
3) I don't want any lip from the dealier if I need any waranty work done.
4) The Texaco lube is probably as good as anything out there for keeping the transmission running as long as the Cummins.

Called the local Dodge dealer and got a price on the Mopar #4874464 transmission fluid; $11. 56/Qt. Then I called the Texaco distributor in the San Diego area, and guess what? They have NEVER heard of Texaco STF 1874, which is listed on the side of my NV5600 as the authorized replacement fluid. They looked in every catalogue and computer list they had and could not find this product! Where are you guy's getting this stuff? Is it listed under some other name or number? Help me out on this one please!! Is it available mail order? No listing on the official Texaco web site either that matches this name or number.

I dunno why they couldn't find it. Have them look again for:
"Synchromesh Transmission fluid" Code - 1874 MTX Fluid

Maybe cross reference by -
GM Spec #9985648
Mopar Part #4761526
GM part # 12345349
Chrysler spec #MS-9924

Try (800) 782-7852 for a dist near you.

I've looked into getting some of the 5600 lube and met with some difficulty as well. The first Texaco distributor I called, and the only one at this point, hadn't heard of it didn't know of it blah, blah, blah. I told him the number, what its called, what its used for and that I saw it on the Texaco web site at http://thegenesisnetwork. equilon.com/genesis/prodinfopdf/out/SYNCHROMESH%20TRANSMISSION%20FLUID.pdf He said he'd look in some catalogs and call me back. When he did he told me that he could get it but didn't have it in stock. After a few days he calls back and tells me that they quit making it. I would have argued the point but I've dealt with these guys in the past. They carry other petrol products beside Texaco, like Delo etc. He'd never heard of Rotella. So now I think I'm best off looking elsewhere. I guess I'll continue my quest here in Dallas to try and find the ever elusive Texaco 1874.

Even in my little town (17,000-----well actually I live in a town of 1,000, 55 miles from the CITY of 17,000), the texaco dist. not only know immediately what I was talking about but had it in stock. His price per gallon in a 5 gallon container, was allmost exactly the DC price per quart.

Don't use the 90 wt gear lubes.
Try the Amsoil Series 3000 5W-30 Diesel Engine oil.
The warranty will be fine, and the Amsoil warranty will pick up where the factory one leaves off.

There was a couple recent posts of guys using the Amsoil 2000 series 5W30 diesel oil and experienced improved shifting. And one post where someone had more trouble shifting after trying it. It would be interesting to put the Syntorq through a battery of tests & compare it to the Amsoil. My only concern with the Amsoil is whether it would have the ability to mainain an oil film with the high loading pressures on the gear teeth, a requirement of gear oil.

TomB,
The NV4500 transmission requires a (GL)Gear Lube like a 75W-90, where as the NV5600 requires a 5W-30 Motor oil as the lubricant.

TomB. I like the $11. 56 a quart price, and I will check with my dealer in the morning!!
One problem I see is that the part number you are using; 484464 is not the same as what
Dane posted; 4761526. Anybody know why thereis a difference?????? Thanx, Pete

Pete: That is the Mopar number I have (484464) that is posted on the transmission housing. I gave that number to the Dodge parts counter man and he found the fluid in his computer by that number. I can't explain the discrepancy. Maybe is can be acessed by both numbers. I still have not been able to find the Texaco stuff. The local distributors are still checking! Hey Dane - Can I get the same fluid from my local GM dealer?

Thanks Tom, I believe that GM's is the same stuff. The price I was told was about $25. 00 for a quart so I hope my dealers price is the same as yours. I had my transmission replaced at 500 miles for the going to 4th grind when cold. New transmission is great but I want to change the fluid now that I have a couple thousand miles on it... ... Pete

I recently tested (oil analysis) the Texaco NVG5600 fluid and it is not a motor oil but a true transmision fluid with 30wt properties. Kinda like an Amsoil Series 2000 30wt (If it existed). It was in a NVG4500 and it shifted poorly. I love what Amsoils Series 2000 75W90 does in a NVG4500 but would hesitate to put the S3K 5w30 engine oil in a 5600. It is great engine oil (I use it and have tested it many times) but not sure of its transmission qualities. Time will tell.

I paid $10. 16 a quart for the GM brand in March, 2000, the last time I bought some for the Grand Am. According to all I have read, the GM, Texaco and DC stuff is all the same, I would bet all made by Texaco.
