will all this just bolt in? i just need to change the drivelin length and clutch right

I believe that the nv5600 is longer, so you need to do something with the mounts as well. That is why you need to change the drive shafts, I guess.

The article by J. P. Callan covers this. With South Bend's conversion kit you can use your original flywheel. A new 5 1/2" longer shift linkage rod from the high/low/4WD range shift lever to the NV241HD transfer case is needed as is a different rear transmission mounting bracket.

should I get the 1 1/4 or the 1 3/8 shft on the nv5600. I have a south bend clutch and dont want to buy a nother one

I was under the impression that you could use the original driveshaft. I've been thinking about doing this if I ever have to go to a dual-disk clutch. Might as well go ahead and get the whole 6-speed transmission if I'm going to have to drop $750 on an input shaft.

Contact Dan at Quad 4x4 for all the details on this. Check below for great info on the NV5600 and why not to go with a 12. 4" clutch model with the 1. 25" input shaft.

EDIT:

Apparently you do have to shorten the driveshaft. The NV5600 is 5. 5" longer as stated above. That's good to know - it looks like that is the only custom work that has to be done though.

The 3rd Gen NV5600s seem to be better, at least shifting-wise. My '03 rowed easier than my '01, same seems to be true for the other 2nd and 3rd Gens equipped with the NV5600.

so what year nv5600 should i look for? will a 3rd gen work?

Quoting from the Quad 4X4 article: Dodge introduced the NV5600 6 speed in 1998. The early version, which is found in 1998 to 2000½ models is known to have synchronizer problems and a weak input shaft. Midway during the 2000 model year, a much improved NV5600 was introduced with a heavier 1⅜" input shaft and reliable synchronizers. At the same time, the old 12. 4" clutch was dropped in favor of a 13" unit.

That article has a couple errors. . . there was no 5600 available in the '98 model year, came out in limited supply for the '99s. And I believe the larger input shaft did not arrive until Jan 2000 in the 2001 trucks.

The 5600 in the 3rd gens is not the same as the one in our 2nd gen trucks. From what I have read, the shift towers are in different locations on the top of the transmission.

Why do want to change transmissions? What do you gain, besides one more gear? The NV4500 is a good transmission. Save yourself a lot time trouble and $, keep the what you have.

How much weight are you pulling in top gear? I worked at a gear shop and most of the trannys that we built were the 4500 and 5600 both had the same trouble in the input shaft gear litterally melted off. We recommended and installed many transmission temp gauges and customers were shocked at how hot they got while pulling 250 -300 not uncommon. that was with stock engine. on average these customers pulled 30,000 lb loads or bigger.

Then they wonder why they explode the pressure plate of there clutch while downshifting :-laf Good for business though.

I swapped...

I dumped the NV4500 for the NV5600 because I... . I really just wanted one... ;) I got one of the last NEW ones that Dan at Quad 4x4 had. All I can say is DAMN, I'M GLAD I DID IT!! It is one sweet transmission. There is a always a gear where you need it. It doesn't shift as smooth as a 4500 but you have to consider how much larger a box it is. It is huge.

And yes, you have to modify the drive line length(s), but if you get the kit from Dan (HIGHLY RECOMMENDED) it comes with evertything you need, even the oil. Get the larger input shaft and do what you have to do about the clutch. It is a big investment, but if you plan to keep the truck it is cheaper than a new truck payment.

Believe me, you will never look back... :-laf

Just installed an NV5600 from an 04 3rd Gen into my 99 2nd Gen with no problems at all. All I had to modify was the transfer case shift rod and the plate on rear of trans. The extra BU light cable was already there, just zip tied up along the frame. I also had to get the driveshafts cut. Longer front and shorten the back by 5. 5". Still waiting on them. Once all is in and running good will be selling old trans and flywheel. As best I can tell an NV5600 is the same for all years. Good luck on your endevers.
