Quick questions, can the 5600 trans be shifted without using the clutch? I have always thought no, but latley i hear different, whats up?

Yea you can , and then you can buy yourself a new one. theses are not big rig trannys. your first thought is "RIGHT"

Yes you can but it needs to be done carefully. I've done it but I don't think it's worth the effort. Like GOTSOOT says..... you might end up buying a replacement.

I really dunno WHY a guy really wants to do that, unless perhaps it's a carry-over from driving other trucks where the gears were not synchronized...

Otherwise, it sorta strikes me as a purely "Macho", "HEY, look at what *I* can do" sort of thing - a risky activity that really has NO redeeming features - or NEED - that I can imagine...

How long will the OEM clutch last and its associated hydraulics if the clutch is only used when starting/stopping? Possibly only starting when stopping if shifted to neutral without using clutch when rolling to a stop. Hhhhmmm makes you wonder if one is not racing if the clutch would ever wear out if the transmission could be used with out the clutch? But everyone is right this transmission should always use the clutch unless it is an emergency!!!

my personal record to date is 250 miles and 27 stop lights. clutch wouldnt disengage and driving it was the only way home. you get to know how to do it really quick. never had to shut it off once to get going again, the fact that it was the middle of the nite helped a lot too.

I have driven big rigs for years, along with that was many years of not using the clutch. I consider myself pretty good at it. I have tried it with the 5600. It can be done but it's really tricky. My personal opinion is the trans was not designed to function in that manner and I think your really risking a major problem. Considering the cost of a new trans vs a new clutch I would keep using the clutch
