Has anyone heard if the factory fill in the NVG4500 5sp has been changed to the SAME 30wt oil as comes in the NVG5600 6sp?

OR. .

Has anyone had their 5sp oil tested? What was the weight (Visc 100).

On my 96, I replaced the 5sp with a 98 and newer trans (factory new) when I had damage to the mainshaft (prior to Standard Trans fix). I Have 26k on this new trans and sent sample in to see how its doing. Trans oil came back as being 30wt but it is tramsmission oil not engine oil. It also was doing OK as far as wear.

I have lots of samples from my old trans to compare against. Both Factory and Amsoil.

This trans has never shifted as good as the original. I monitor trans oil temps and this one runs 15 - 20 degrees warmer then original. When I grabbed the sample it seemed very thin for "75w85"! Starting to make sence. The transmission are shipped with oil as I understand.

I bought the recommended GL-4 synthetic from
my local Dodge dealer. I work at an autoshop
and it cost me $17. 00 per quart! I had to
repair a lot of cars to pay for that. I
could not find the fluid any where else but
Dodge. Do not use the GL-5 synthetic, it can
damage the trans and make it run hotter than
normal. Yes, the fluid is as thin as light
weight motor oil,GL-4 that is. If you use
the improper fluid it will make it hard to
shift.

Joe... . I have lots of experience with Castrol Syntorq GL4 and Amsoils GL5 oils. GL5 does NOT run hotter. Infact I think they run cooler in my experience.

I think all the propaganda on GL5 problems in NVG4500s in based on 10 year old tests with outdated fluids and Non Dodge applications. This trans was built and designed for Chevy. We have had several Chevys with this transmission and they ran alot hotter due do no air movement by trans.

Also, In my opinion, the transmissions I have ran GL5 fluids in have shifted as good or better than factory fill.

The oil I just dumped was not Castrol Syntorq 75W85 yet it was factory fill. That is what I as looking for.

jjw,

I tried a GL-5 75w-90 gear oil (Quaker State Marine) in my NVG 4500 a while ago and it caused some gear clash shifting from 3rd to 4th in short order. I quickly dumped that stuff and put in Amsoil Series 2000. No problems since.
