Does anyone know of a law in New York that makes it illegal to drive a 18 passenger van in that state. I was told by a rental company that they will not rent me a 18 passenger van Oo. (Bachelor party planning) Oo. if I was going to rent it in PA and then drive it thru NY they said it wasnt because of state to state travel but because of the 18 passenger capability of the van.

Any help would be great.

Check DOT regulations. That many people fall under the public passenger rules. It doesn't matter what the use private or for hire. It is the total number of people involved.

In Indiana its 14 passengers before the licences is required.

Rent a U-Hual that way the designated driver doesn't have to deal with the drunken fools, of course it probably isn't too comfortable. :-laf

We rented a small shuttle bus for a buddies party. The cool chick driving didn't have any problem with having a keg on the bus!

I know you need a CDL with a Passenger ensorsment if over 15 passengers in NYS. That's prolly the hangup. I don't know how it works in Pa.

The CDL program should include all states (should be the same). In Florida you need a Class C or B if you are carrying over 14 passengers. The difference between C or B would be gvw and air brakes.

In New York State, DOT/DMV rules prohibit anyone with a non-passenger endorsed license from driving a vehicle with a capacity of more than 9 passengers.

Minimum licensure class is CP for a 15 pass van driver, but usually its more common to get a BP+airbrake so you can drive a bus too.
