With the recent cold ambient temps (35-40's)..... my transmission doesn't seem to like O. D. very much... . it only engages once the engine is at around 140*F..... same goes for the TCC.

It did it leaving from Massdiesel's place yesterday... even though it wasn't really cold out... . I probably should have turned around and let someone take my truck out for a ride, but I had to go to work.

Anyone else experience this? Mine's a 47RH, if that matters.....

Matt - hoping that my 47RH is gonna be okay.

Sounds like you have a problem with the trans temp sensor, maybe just a poor connection. My AT will shift into OD at about the same 1. 5 mile mark from home no matter if it's below zero or 90° out, this is before the coolant temp has even budged. The sensor couldn't be too expensive, some folks have replaced it with a resistor, 7k I think, this would be an easy way to check on what's up.

Call Scott

Mat give Scott a call, he will know for sure.

I know on my truck OD will not kick in until a certain temp is reached and it says so in the manual, yours is a different year so I don't know if it is the same or if you have a problem but Scott can answer that.

Good luck,

Fred. :)

94 auto

The first winter I had my 94,I had alot of problems with the trans not shifting into overdrive and/or the tc not locking up.

This was happening with the temperature around 20F.

I would drive for many miles before it upshifted into 4th. Once I drove most of the way from Pahrump to Las Vegas (55miles) before it shifted.

I took it to the dealer twice but their attitude was " we can't duplicate it and we never heard of it so it must not be happening. " I did get them to change the trans temp sensor but in my case that did not help. However I believe that is most likely your problem.

My initial solution was to always use the block heater when I planned to drive early and it was cold outside. That worked.

Later I added a Horton and with it I no longer needed the block heater. I still plug it in but I do not need to because of the trans.

If you have a 94 shop manual, page 21-103 states that 60F is what the trans fluid needs to be to shift into overdrive.

My 94 runs real cool. I never see 190 unless I am in Las Vegas traffic with the ambient temperature around 110.

Maybe Dodge has a fix for your problem now. They sure didn't in 95.

Hope this helps you.

Matt-

FWIW - My manual says that transmission will nopt shift into OD until trans temp is at least 60 deg. F. (it's been awhile since I read the manual so I'm pretty sure 60 is the correct number. )

But, as Heyboss said, call Massdiesel, he'll know for sure.

Yeah, I've noticed that with mine too. When it's cold out, it takes longer to get it to shift into OD. It goes to a higher RPM before it makes that shift for the first time.

Hey Matt, nice avatar, by the way. ;) :D

Fireman Dave, I put together that avatar about 2-weeks ago... . and I've been hemming and hawing as to whether or not to use it... ... well, there it is... hope nobody hates it. :D

Sounds to me like I need a transmission oil heater... . hey wait... . the pan is steel (stock) so I could buy one of those little magnetic heaters and stick it on there and heat up my fluid before I plan on leaving.

MANY thanks to all the responses... . seems like I have an annoying problem that a Horton setup would help fix, but I just can't justify the $800 right now for that. An Esbar (sp?) would help out too... but there goes that $800 again... .

By the way... how did that install go on Saturday??

Matt - my transmission is so cool that it needs a sweater!!
