saw a post where some one with the o/d button on the dash, swapped over to a automatic shifter with the o/d button in the end of it. any info on this ?
I did that. Any shift lever from a '98 thru '02 will work. I used a '99. The shift lever is exactly the same as the '94 thru '97 except for the button and two wires. The wires are a little bit short to reach the stock connector so you have to solder on some extension wires. I used the base of the stock push button so it would plug into the existing wireing harness. You also will have to mount an OD indicator light somewhere. I used a green 12 volt LED from Radio Shack. Check the wireing diagram in your service manual for the pins on the push button base to wire it correctly.
How difficult was it to change levers? I have been thinking of drilling and tapping my 96 shifter and putting the switch there--your idea sounds like a neater installation.
The shift lever is held in with a pin. Just drive it out. Put the new shift lever in. Drive the pin back in. The only awkward part of that is the plastic piece that moves with the shift lever to block the slot it moves in. It's a bit of a PITA to thread into place. An extra hand would be a help. Make sure the wires clear the steering wheel tilt mechanism. You don't want them clipped off.
There is a picture of my dash that includes the lever in my Reader's Rigs gallery.
I will look into that next week; I have a yard in Gridley that specilizes in wrecked CTD's. I have gotten lots of good parts there at a fraction of dealer cost.
