<!--StartFragment --> Well like the title says... woo-hoo!! Some of you might remember a post I had made concerning the OD on my truck. Well, today I figured I`d drop the pan and have a look see, if nothing else I`d get to service the unit/adjust the bands. WELL, lo and behold I spy the OD solenoid, and sure enough one of the attaching bolts is basically falling out and the other two were not quite "tight". So what was happening is when the unit got warm enough the loose solenoid was bleeding off enough oil to cause the unit to drop out of 4th. The OD sol is nothing more than a controlled leak in the 4th gear hydraulic ckt, and when the PCM commands 4th it closes off the controlled leak and 4th gear applies, in my case enough oil was leaking past to cause the 4th gear drop-out. This would explain also, why if I mashed the skinny pedal sometimes it would pop back into 4th, because the higher line/TV psi was compensating for the leaky solenoid... but it`s kind of a bad thing to drive with your foot on the floor all the time . So, a $30. 00 case of ATF (dex 3), one bottle of Lubegard Red and the unit is working better than ever. Just thought I`d give everyone a heads up considering how many OD probs these trucks seem to have.

Oo. Oo. Oo.

I find a lot of fixes like that. It would at first seem like doom and gloom. Then when the reality hits your all :)

Had you taken it to the dealer, you no doubt would have had a new valve body at the least. Not to mention a $900. 00 plus repair bill.

I took a truck to a dealer once... ... ... they charged me $$ for work that wasn't even performed. Guess they didn't realize I'm an ASE Master Tech. :-laf

I called them on it too  :D

Good find Bro!!!!

I hear ya, I have all the service records on the truck from day 1. The orig owner had it at the dealer at least 4 or 5 times complaining about it dropping out of od, you know the rest... "cannot duplicate customer`s concern", "took vehicle for extended road test, no problem found" etc. etc. . Funny thing is, this has been a problem on this truck all the way back to 24k miles (since about a year old). I have records showing that they (the dealer) checked the CVI`s (clutch volume indexes), funny... HOW do you check the CVI`s on a completely hydraulic trans, CVI readings did`nt come about till DC released the electronic units (96 and up) AND the orig owner had SEVERAL trans services done... . go figure, I guess none of the tech`s saw the little screw hanging on by literally a thread,LOL.

SWEET !!! ... . now, when you guys find stuff like this, jump into the "best tips" forum and post your problem, your systematic diagnosis and best of all, your fix... this will REALLY help not only current 1st genners but the next generation of guys who get one of these ole girls... . good job you guys. !!!

pb...

ps: take 5 RWHP from pettycash/HP box.....
