Ok, I'm no wizard on this but I've been told that one thing you can do to help reduce your "exposure" to things like this is set your email viewer to open mail in "plain text format" not HTML format.

HTML can run malicious code in the background (like when you have 'preview mail' turned on) a Mass Mailer Worm will gather up your email addresses, pick one of them and send itself out to all the others using the random email address it selected. In the end you think it came from TDR (for example) when in fact it came from someone else entirely.

Actually happened to me a year or so back.

Run an updated virus utility, even a worm/trojan detector, then change all your settings from HTML to plain text. That will help a bit.

FWIW

Virus

We've checked the systems at the TDR that are configured for webmaster@turbodieselregister.com again. Those e-mails didn't come from any of us.

Definitey delete it. Do not open any of those files. Some of these viruses are getting pretty tricky and sending them from email addresses other than what is on the actual machine to make them harder to trace (they get them out of messages that you've sent out).

Do you run a current anti-virus?

I can't think of any time that an attachment would be sent from any of us to a user unless you had specifically requested something - so if you get one assume that it's a virus and do not open it.

A similar happened to me. I keep getting e-mails bounced back with puzzled comments. Running current Norton Anti-Virus and Zone Alarm.

Thanks for the HTML tip, it's gone!

Virus

I just got an email from "rpatton@turbodieselregister.com"with the subject heading Cummine Engine Company - Parts and Service Survey.

Are the Ford guys attacking? Besides, better learn the spelling of our engine.

Apologies

The typographical error was mine. I apologize. It should have been "Cummins" not "Cummine". I should have proofed the e-mail better before hitting the send button.

Again, accept my apologize for the error.

Oops!

My apologies for deleting it! My virus detection didn’t sound off any alarms, but since I had read so many instances of non-legitimate emails, I assumed the worst. Please forgive me and resend the survey. I would gladly read and/or answer questions.

Signed,

Maybe they weren't getting the kind of responses the Corporate CEO's wanted to read.

ie not all sunshine, and lollipops.

'Ya know, stuff like cheap lift pumps, killer dowel pins, and D/C's "shoot 'em on sight" warranty voiding policy.
