The seal is way up in there, I'm thinking over an inch. The cavity below the seal should be packed with grease, scoop all the grease out and you should find the dust seal first, remove it and you should find the snap ring and the main oil seal. When I replace the pitman shaft seals I remove the top cover and pitman shaft together, it makes it a lot easier to reach the snap ring and drive the seals from the top.
what's the point of packing this area with grease? Is it just to keep dust out? I have rebuilt many gears and never put grease in there and have seen many others that were fine without it. ???
I assume its to keep water and dust away from the seal, mine was packed with grease from the factory and the mopar seal kit I used included grease and instructions to completely fill the cavity below the seal after the box was reassembled.
