OAT Coolant?

I was under the hood of the 14 today and noticed on the passenger side firewall is a container of fluid that says OATcollent fluid or something like that and that it is under 21Lbs pressure. Is this something we need to refill and how is it under pressure? Or better yet...what is it?

It is the latest in high tech coolant designed to last 10 years,as with all modern cooling systems it operates under pressure to keep the boiling point a non-issue.

Thank you. I realize now that I have heard of OAT coolant but not in context with these trucks. Kinda feel like DUH! I guess because the bottle is so far to the rear I was thinking it was something for the turbo. Little slow today I guess. And it didn't look like coolant but they have soooo many colors now. Just put a little Asian blue in the Suburu. Maybe it's an OAT as well.

HOAT and OAT are different. Colors and makeup. Not to be mixed AFAIK. G05 is HOAT. My '14 Hemi uses OAT.

It used to be so much easier. One anti freeze fit all vehicles. And it came in a gallon CAN. Opened with an oil spout can opener. The radiator cap was up front. On the radiator. I had a couple choices on brands/grades of oil and there were a couple automatic transmission fluids. Filters were a little special but many sizes were universal. Now my storage cabinet looks like a closet for a mad scientist. I have card files and notes to remind what all this stuff is for. Now there is HOAT not to be confused with OAT. Sometimes I'm the tailpipe and sometimes I'm the pedal. Today was one of the tailpipe days. No alcohol involved but there will be soon. Gettin' old ain't fer sissys.

It sure looks like Dexcool. But I'm not sure. Ford did a similar switch. Their HOAT is called GOLD coolant, the new stuff is ORANGE.

Actually the new Chrysler OAT is purple and of a slightly different composition than previous OAT formulas.

Personally I think it's great that coolant has come such a long way from the days lf old school traditional ethylene glycol. Aside from the obvious reduced maintenance costs think about the reduced wastes associated with 10 year coolant. That's 5x the lifespan of the coolant my truck was designed for, which coincidentally has been changed over to Peak Global Lifetime (also an OAT coolant).

Is this the new non-H2O stuff?

OAT is an acronym for Organic Acid (Additive) Technology which describes the type of materials responsible for the corrosion protection offered by a coolant of this type. OATs are Long Life Coolants (LLC), based on minimally depleting CarboxylateTechnology.

I believe you stll mix with H2O (50/50) unless you purchase the pre-mixed/ diluted stuff.

The many coolants have coloring added so mechanics know what they are dealing with, where it was coming from in the engine (or transmission)(ATF is colored red), and how to legally, responsibly, and properly dispose of it. Purple used to indicate propylene glycol which was slightly less toxic to pets and the environment. But now with OAT and HOAT, they seem to be using some of the same colors?

"I left out for a hauling job from home on Monday to Greer, SC. When I started up my truck, my low coolant light was on (it was about 25*F...the lowest so far this year). Since I left around 5:00 am, I drove a few hours until daylight and then checked for any leaks. There were none...thankfully. I imagine the colder weather contributed to the light coming on. It never came back on two of the times I re-started after the engine made it to operating temperature.

As my route was going to take me through Middlesboro, KY on HWY 25-E, I stopped in at Tim Short Chrysler. The parts manager previously worked at another location and I know him well. I now know why RAM is so tight and marginal with their coolant fills at the factory :
This was the concentrate (dilute with distilled water for a 50/50 mix) and it lists for around $57/gallon and I paid $43 #ad
for this gallon (part number 68163848AA)"

That stuff was LIQUID GOLD when I bought it in 2013 for my then 2013 RAM 3500. It's much more reasonable now....I paid $21.28/gallon for 68163848AB when I did my 150k drain & fill on my '14.

Chrysler, the last of the Detroit 3 car makers to use a silicated antifreeze, has switched to an organic acid technology (OAT) formula for the 2013 model year. The change to an “OAT” might have been anticipated with the acquisition by Fiat, but the Chrysler-selected OAT formula, although it shares a major inhibitor, is not the same as used by Fiat.
