I have went and looked at the websites of three vendors for the OBD readers, Harrison, AutoEnginuity & the OBDIIbut but could use some help on which one is really best. Anybody have any experience with using more than one of these for comparison? It looks like they range in price from $130 to $230.

I have a 98. 5 w/ Cummins that has started acting up, I can't tell if the transmission is hunting or the engine throttle system is acting up. The engine RPM wants to flucuate briefly without moving the accelerator pedal.

I probably won't fix it myself but would really like to have some kind of idea what the problem could be before the dealer tell's me what they think it is and starts changing parts.

Thanks in advance for any help.

i have a 98. 5 . i use alex peppers obd11. it has worked well, its a little complicated. i have had very little trouble with my truck, it has 354,000 kms. on the rpm fluchations, its probable noise in the electrical wiring effecting the apps. i had that problem, the fix is get a filter from DTT. hope this helps.

Thanks for the response. I went for another driver yesterday afternoon and the transmission is really hunting. When I stopped and checked the fluid level the fluid on the stick was foamy, color was good and clear and it wasn't burnt smelling. Now whether the fluid was foamy becuase of the hunting due to an electrical problem or its an internal transmission problem I don't know. The transmission is due for a fluid and filter change and band adjustment so I will get that done first and see what happens.

I as well have had very little trouble with this truck, we ordered it back in early '98 and picked up in July of '98. Had a Crank Position Sensor go out, truck will crank over fine but wont start. If you notice a problem with your tach bouncing up and down or going completely to zero suspect the CPS, that's what happened to mine.

You mentioned a 'filter from DTT', what is 'DTT'?

TKeller hope you find the problem with the transmission. DTT is diesel transmission technolgies. they are in Abbotsford B. C. they are well known on TDR for their transmissions. when d/c built these trucks they put the wiring for the apps in the harness with other wires. electrical noise from these wires is picked up by the apps and causes the torque converter to lock an unlock. this causes the rpms to jump up and down. foaming in the fluid generally indicates low fluid level or over heating. hope this helps. cheers.
