new to the scanners game had someone recommended alpha and another linkmx as I see the link max is not Iphone compatible. Do I really want a phone compatible scanner. Can’t I just get a stand alone unit? Looking for one that works well with my 2016 3500 tradesmen

Thanks looks like a viable option
Still would like a wired stand alone option
I’m just not a Bluetooth fan I’m a hard wired guy
I do appreciate the link
Thank you

After reading through some of the scanner posts here let me say l’m not a person that’s in search of a device to change or alter my truck, it’s stock with a extended warranty . I do like to know what is going on with my truck & maybe the ability to simply reset something. I’d rather not use a third party device such as a computer or cellphone.
I truly appreciate the knowledge that’s here!
Thank you all

Wish me luck 600 miles home Monday towing

No you won't because they are all far less capable then ALFA OBD.
Why spend money for crap?
The Smartphone Solution is top notch!

Even if you do not want to change any settings - you sure want to read all monitores and modules the vehicle has, and at that point most if not all other devices stumble badly, e.g. ABS Codes, Airbag Codes and so on.

Make sure to choose a scanner that works on Bluetooth, Not WiFi. The reason is that the Wifi Connected ones require you to disconnect from whatever wifi connection that you're one and connect to the scanner. When that is done, you can't connect to the internet from the phone because the phones are set to use wifi instead of the phone data when it senses a connection. I use an iOS app called OBD Fusion which allows you to scan the vehicle and if you have internet, it will go online and get info regarding the codes that you got, but can't if you're connected on wifi to your scanner.
