Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Occasional flat throttle response

Hi guys. I'm relatively new at this website so bare with me as I stumble through. I have a 98 24 valve CTD with 148K and a manual transmission, with no previous issues. About a month ago, I noticed a flat throttle response when attempting to accelerate. I noticed it had been a while since changing the fuel filter, so did so. When changing the filter, I found the retaining nut loose on the canister, so figured I had been sucking air. Since that time, when cruising at speed, if I attempt to accelerate, nothing happens. If I push the clutch in and then resume speed, the truck acts normal. I checked the pressure from the lift pump, and it seems normal. There is no check engine light that comes on. Could this be the throttle position sensor? Any ideas or input? Anyone else had this happen? Thanks, Don.

You are experiencing what is commonly called "Dead Pedal" which is often a early symptom of an VP-44 (injection pump) failure.

iirc, the key trick will not work for a 98. 5, someone with a Smarty might be able to read/clear codes.
