Hi all,

Within the past week, occaisionally the OD off and trans temp light will flash on for a second, a chime will sound and the rpms will surge as if the transmission is no longer engaged. I can't detect any codes with the key check process. This only happens at freeway speeds. Any ideas? Thanks.

Check the trans control wiring harness for any scuffed wires. The eraly trucks could have a problem scuffing the wires on some mounting brackets.

Unplug the trans control harness, the round 8 wire plug, and check for fluid contamination. Sometimes the seal will go bad and let ATF into the plug.

If you haven't lately, replace the gov pressure\trans temp transducer inside the pan. Likely that is your problem but check the other things before dropping the pan.

I had a similar problem with my truck last winter like cerber said the round 8 wire plug on mine was the problem I cleaned it put dielectric grease in it and all works perfect. Mine was getting salty road spray I think no problem in over a year

Hate to sound like such a noob but I was under the truck and checking the wiring plugs for the trans. I'm not sure I checked the correct plugs. The two I inspected were on the left side of the transmission, just above the pan. I was searching for the 8 wire round plug and the closest I could locate was roundish, but not truly circular. It was fairly clean inside but I covered the mating face of the plug with dielectric grease. I next checked a rectangular plug with 5 wires coming out of it and what looked like a gap for a 6th. That one was thouroughly coated, it didn't smell like atf but more like engine oil and there was a good film on the loom. Perhaps it wicked down into the plug and may be the source of the short? What's the best way to clean it all out of the plug assembly without damaging pins, etc. ? Thanks again.

Thats the range sensor, gear selector, neutral safety switch. The trans temp is in the roundish connector.

Cleaning should be done with electrical parts spray cleaner.
