I have a '99 with A/T. Is there any benefit when driving around town to have the OD locked out? What does everyone out there do? With the OD locked out it keeps the revs closer to 2000 which is supposed to be the "sweet spot" for the Cummins, right? Better mileage and power. Thanks for your answers in advance. . Larv

I leave mine wit the o/d not locked out while around town. I do lock it out when pulling moderate hills when traffic of other factors make my speed such that the A/T wants to keep shifting between high gear and overdrive.

I keep mine off as well until I hit the HWY. I wish it would stay off even after I turn the truck off so I dont have to keep turning it off.

I lock the OD out in town only to reduce cruise speed, usually when speed limit is 35 or less, or on some of the hills in town. My mileage varies by about 1 mpg between city and open hwy driving. Keeping the OD locked out may prevent excessive engine cooling, but I imagine that warning of excessive idling is when the truck is parked. The light load of moving the pickup around town should be enough to keep the engine warm.
Just my 2 cents worth. #ad

I keep mine locked out below 50 mph. I don't like it shifting back and forth. As far as fuel usage, I can't say. I don't think there's a noticeable difference.

I've been thinking it might be an advantage to have the OD normally off for those who do most of their driving in town. Could this be done with an easy wiring change? With all the expertise out there, I'm sure someone could figure out how to do this.
